What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a "nose job," is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to improve its appearance and/or function. As the central feature of the face, the nose plays a crucial role in facial harmony—even subtle changes can create significant improvements in overall appearance.

Dr. James Rosing approaches rhinoplasty with an artistic eye and technical precision. His goal is to create results that look natural and complement your unique facial features—never overdone or generic. Whether you seek cosmetic refinement, correction of breathing problems, or both, Dr. Rosing will develop a customized plan to achieve your goals.

Rhinoplasty Techniques

Open Rhinoplasty

Preferred for complex reshaping, providing maximum visualization and precision during surgery.

  • Superior visualization
  • Greater precision
  • Ideal for complex cases
  • Minimal hidden scar

Closed Rhinoplasty

All incisions inside the nose, leaving no visible external scars—ideal for minor refinements.

  • No external incisions
  • Shorter procedure time
  • Less swelling
  • Good for minor changes

Functional Rhinoplasty

Combines aesthetic refinement with correction of structural issues that impair breathing.

  • Corrects deviated septum
  • Improves airflow
  • May be covered by insurance
  • Aesthetic + functional

Are You a Candidate?

Rhinoplasty may be right for you if you are concerned about any of the following:

Nose size in relation to facial balance
Nose width at the bridge or nostrils
Visible humps or depressions on the bridge
Nasal tip that is bulbous, drooping, or upturned
Nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned
Nasal asymmetry or deviation
Previous injury causing deformity
Breathing difficulties due to structure

Recovery Timeline

Understanding what to expect during your rhinoplasty recovery helps ensure optimal results.

Day 1-3

Initial Recovery

Rest with head elevated. Nasal splint and internal packing in place. Moderate swelling and bruising around eyes and nose. Pain medication provided for comfort.

Day 5-7

Splint Removal

External splint removed. Internal splints or packing removed if present. Significant improvement in appearance. Most bruising beginning to fade.

Week 2

Most swelling has subsided. Bruising largely resolved. Many patients comfortable returning to work and social activities. Glasses can be worn with care.

Week 3-4

Resuming Activities

Light exercise can resume. Continued improvement in nasal contour. Avoid contact sports and strenuous activity. Swelling continues to refine.

Month 2-3

Healing Progress

Most external swelling resolved. Nasal tip may still have subtle fullness. Results becoming more defined. Full activity can resume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals who are bothered by the size, shape, or proportion of their nose, have breathing difficulties due to structural issues, or have nasal deformities from injury. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, non-smokers, have realistic expectations, and their facial growth is complete (typically 16+ for females, 18+ for males). During your consultation, Dr. Rosing will evaluate your nasal anatomy, discuss your goals, and determine if rhinoplasty is right for you.

In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible external scars. Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) in addition to internal incisions, allowing better visualization and access to nasal structures. Dr. Rosing will recommend the approach best suited to your specific needs—open technique is often preferred for more complex reshaping, while closed may be suitable for minor refinements.

Rhinoplasty typically takes 2-3 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. More extensive reconstruction or revision rhinoplasty may take longer. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and you will go home the same day after a brief recovery period.

Rhinoplasty does not affect your vocal cords and should not change your voice. However, if you have significant nasal obstruction that is being corrected, you may notice your voice sounds slightly different due to improved airflow. This is usually a positive change, as it reflects better breathing function.

Yes, rhinoplasty can address both cosmetic concerns and breathing problems simultaneously. Functional rhinoplasty corrects structural issues like a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or collapsed nasal valves that obstruct airflow. Dr. Rosing has extensive experience combining aesthetic refinement with functional improvement for comprehensive results.

As with any surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, and reactions to anesthesia. Specific to rhinoplasty, there are risks of asymmetry, difficulty breathing, numbness, scarring, and the possibility of needing revision surgery. Dr. Rosing's meticulous technique and experience minimize these risks. He will discuss all potential risks and safety measures during your consultation.

Rhinoplasty results are permanent, though your nose will continue to age naturally along with the rest of your face. The reshaped bone and cartilage structures remain in place for life. Minor changes may occur over many years due to natural aging, but the overall improvements from surgery are lasting.
