Susan Pearose, PA-C DERMATOLOGY

Our dermatology division is led by Susan Pearose, board certified Physician Assistant and diplomate fellow in dermatology. She is originally from Orange County, California where she attended the University of California, Irvine for her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences. Susan later attended Keck School of Medicine of USC and completed her master’s degree in their Physician Assistant program. While attending USC, she volunteered as an educator at The Lamp Community of Skid Row in Downtown, Los Angeles. She then furthered her education by completing her dermatology fellowship from the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants.

A full skin examination

or skin check is meant to identify any abnormal skin lesions that should be either treated with liquid nitrogen, or shave biopsied to determine if there are any atypical cells. Skin examination is part of preventative as well as therapeutic skin health.

Acne Vulgaris

A skin condition characterized by clogged pores, pimples, and sometimes cysts or nodules. The disease has a variable manifestation and therefore is treated with different approaches based on severity. Acne is a treatable disease with a very high rate of success.

Atopic Dermatitis

A chronic inflammatory skin condition that leads to itchy, red, and dry skin.

Rosacea: Two Subtypes

Subtype 1

Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea, characterized by flushing and persistent redness. Visible blood vessels may also appear.

Subtype 2

Papulopustular rosacea, characterized by facial redness with bumps or pimples.

Dermatitis is

an inflammation of the skin that can result from various causes, including contact with irritants or allergens. Examples include atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff).

Psoriasis Vulgaris

A chronic autoimmune disorder that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells, leading to thick, silvery scales and red patches.

What is an excision?

Excision defined: 'the act or procedure of removing by or as if by cutting out; especially surgical removal or resection.'

A skin excision is a minor surgical procedure where a lesion is removed for the purpose of biopsy (to analyze the cells using a microscope and staining to determine if there is atypia), or to completely remove with a standard margin.

What is Mohs?

Mohs (named after Dr. Mohs) surgery is an excision method or technique which accomplishes two main goals: clear margins and normal skin preservation. The procedure used to treat skin cancer. This surgery involves cutting away thin layers of skin. Each thin layer is looked at closely for signs of cancer. The process keeps going until there are no signs of cancer.

The goal of Mohs surgery is to remove all of the skin cancer without hurting the healthy skin around it. Mohs surgery allows the surgeon to be sure that all the cancer is gone. This makes it more likely that the cancer is cured. It reduces the need for other treatments or more surgery.

During Mohs surgery, medicine to numb the area is usually given so that you don't feel pain. Most people can go home after surgery and don't need to stay in a hospital.

Mohs surgery is also called Mohs micrographic surgery.
